How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

How does laser tattoo removal work?  Does laser tattoo work?  How long does it take to work?  How effective is it? These are probably the questions that brought you here.  We are here to answer all of your questions!

How does laser tattoo removal work?  Lasers are used to target the ink in the skin and break down the ink so that it can be removed from the body as waste.  The lasers used by Sugarland Tattoo Removal use different lasers to target and remove all colors from the skin and leave it looking clear and smooth.

Bursts of light are emitted from the lasers and aimed directly at the tattoo.  The lasers target different colors of ink and break the ink up into tiny particles that can be removed from skin by the body’s natural processes as waste.  There is no cutting, bleaching or chemical removal technique that is used in the process and the body can completely remove the degraded ink safely.

How Long Does it Take?

Obviously, the size and type of tattoo effect the duration of a tattoo removal session as well as the number of sessions that will be required.  Each session can last as little as a few minutes, but will rarely last more than 30 minutes.  Most tattoos will require more than a single session to remove, but more complex, deeper or unconventional tattoos may require more sessions than a traditional tattoo.

A traditional tattoo can usually be removed with several treatments.  The treatments are spaced no closer together than every four weeks to allow the underlying skin to heal between sessions and to allow the body to remove as much of the ink as it is going to.  This allows us to have a full understanding of what to focus on in the next session.

How well does laser tattoo removal work?

The answer to this question depends on several factors.  The treatment works best on dark inks and lighter skin.  However, dark inks can usually be removed completely from any skin pigment and almost any color can be removed from lighter skin.

Does laser tattoo removal work anywhere?

The location of the tattoo is also a factor.  A tattoo in a bony area like the ankle, wrist or spine will be more difficult to remove than one in an area with a layer of fat under the skin like the arm, calf or thigh.

Does laser tattoo removal work on all tattoos?

More complex tattoos with more colors will be more difficult to remove.   Simple tattoos with black ink are simple to remove and the removal is often complete.  Because darker inks are the easiest to remove, any ink that is not completely removed is likely to be light in color and paler than it started out, making the ink much less noticeable and easy to cover.
